Most often, the fur underneath and around the buttons is badly rubbed.
The fur has oxidized and finding a match to replace the areas is generally- not able to be done.
But, I’m telling you that the retro furs that were designed for button closings can look even more “today-hip and cool”! You can replace the old fashioned buttons with exciting jump out buttons that enhance the entire “Madmen-Marilyn” chic look. I often will send or take a customer to a well known accessories shop and we pick out fantastic matching and enhancing buttons to the fabric and the fur. Recently, we put a set of Diamond look-crystal studded looking buttons and and another with the black jade with gold trim look on a new and a retro old fur. Now, with a few other touch ups, they can’t wear either one of these “new” old furs without being stopped and complimented a few times each day and the referrals to me have been amazing!

cut out the small worn area and wet stretch the old fur to fill in the small gap. Then we will put new, appropriate hook and eye closings measured for you. Actually, your fur will retain dirt and air particles more than any other article of your clothing. How many times have you come home and been amazed at how dirty your face was from the unfortunate normal degree of air pollution! You know that your hair get dirty by just
catching all the minute air particles and absorbing odors. In the same way, the hair of the fur absorbs, attract and holds these normal everyday and everywhere soiling. Imagine resting your head on the seat of your car, in the cab, against an elevator wall--you would wash it everyday!
 
Yes, even if you hardly wear your furs, you should definitely clean your fur every other year.

Your fur needs fresh air. In effect the leather and fur hair “need to breathe”. Even in a closet there is a flow of air. Enclosing it will promote that musky smell that you have seen when you take any article oout that was left in an enclosed space.
The bag does not protect it from moths-it actually promotes their enclosed nesting.
The temperature will be warmer in the bag than your home. This enhances the drying out of the leather. The bag will keep pressing the hair down, and in time, the fur hair will remain in a flattened down position. It would be like the way your hair looks after you have worn a hat for just a short time.
 
So, No, absolutely do not leave your fur in an enclosed bag.

5. Are European snap-spring hooks better to keep a fur coat closed?

Accepted Answer

The second type of closings are called European hooks and eyes. These are moveable
snap click closings that are metal or plastic. They operate using a hinge and have a small bump and receiving hole so they click into place. You have to press the hook to click it closed, Then you have to pry-pop to open it. It is, in effect, a manual “male/female”closure. The french curved male part goes through the ring on the other side and then snaps closed into the receiving indent.
 
The snap and ring hold closed under strain, because not only are they a stiff
durable material, but they are must be sewn into, and operate from the back of the leather to the front.
 
Some women object because they are more apparent visually when the garment is open.
However, I have found that this is an initial overly critical reaction. After people have them-they don’t “see them”, and are so happy with their stronger working ability. The one problem is that while they hold the garment firmly closed, under the most difficult conditions, they can rip the the fur, while staying closed, when a lady sits down or gets up from a difficult position.
 
I always tell my customers to open the bottom hooks when they get into a car, like a man who lifts his pants and pops open his jacket button before he sits down.

Accepted Answer

The wire hooks, by necessity cannot be that stiff. Over time, they get softer from the constant bending closed and prying them open. Also, the constant shifting torque strain on them of our movement in the coat weakens them and pulls the handsewn hook out. They can be sewn back in and replaced, but it will happen again.
 
The rings are hand sewn on,or partially into the leather. Unfortunately, a severe tug, such as uncomfortably getting in or out of the car, can rip them out. Sometimes, the closing is pulling the two sides too tight for the actual comfortable proper fit and strains their hold. This happens if the the coat is too small or if the owner is attempting to look leaner in the coat than they actually are. In either of these cases, the rings should be moved in closer to the center tuxedo to allow more room.
 
The garment may be too big or the hooks and rings may be too loose and not be lined up correctly. This causes the fur to shift and move more than necessary and also strains the hooks and rings. The hooks and rings should be placed so the overlay front should drape flat without any degree of pulling or bagging. 
 
By the way, when we get furs in for summer cold storage, one of the first things we do is to check to see the condition of the hooks and rings. They are normally tightened and replaced as part of normal detailed yearly maintenance while in cold storage.

You want an environment where it is very cool to feeling cold, with a slight rejuvenating degree of controlled humidity and constant fan blown air movement.
 
You can only get this life extending treatment in a true cold storage vault. You own a valuable product. If you take normal car of the fur, it will look beautifully new and last a very long time

She had them sewn on, and would get compliments and admiring looks from other women about the blazer. Before she told them, they thought,
she had spent five times as much at an exclusive designer store. We have also, always recommended, letting us make you matching fabric buttons form the material at no extra charge.
 
Elegant buttons don’t have to be ostentatious, But, you know that you can have the greatest outfit- but it only really comes together as a complete look when you accessorize with the rings, bracelets and earrings.
